A kid's wardrobe reorganisation project

I love organising the house, there’s something about it, that for me makes a bad day turn into a good one, it’s almost like a form of self care!

However, there are some rooms or spaces that take a little bit more desire, and effort to organise, or even reorganise, and Ryan’s wardrobe is one of those spaces.

I kept putting off his wardrobe reorganisation because I didn’t know where to start, and there were so many small bits and pieces that I had to deal with, which I really didn’t want to.

But, the time finally came where I was fed up, and finally got around to tackling his wardrobe once and hopefully for all.

The main aim of his wardrobe reorganisation was to set up his drawers and shelves so he could easily access what he needed to get ready for the day, on his own.

I hope this post provides you with some practical tips on how you can start your kid’s wardrobe reorganisation in your own home, if it’s something that you’re interesting in doing.

Organising storage boxes

As Ryan’s bedroom has the best storage, it’s also used to store laundry products, so any reorganisation of his wardrobe needed to take these items into consideration.

The first part of his wardrobe that I reorganised was where the laundry products, his Lego, and his orange storage boxes were kept.

The only thing that was reorganised here were the orange storage boxes, which contained:

  • Top box – small toys, Mr Potato Head, Roblox characters, Pez dispensers, key rings, and a Thomas the Tank Engine wallet
  • Middle box – this box was empty
  • Lower box – soft toys

The first thing I did to reorganise these storage boxes was a toy declutter, where I donated toys that were too small, or weren’t played with.

Once done, I refilled the storage boxes with things that Ryan accesses regularly, which were:

  • Top box – activity books, scrap paper, markers and pencils
  • Middle box – the toys that remained after the toy declutter
  • Lower box – soft toys (this box is empty in the image as the soft toys were on Ryan’s bed)

Organising kid’s clothing

Organising Ryan’s clothing was the reason why I wanted to reorganise his wardrobe, as I really want him to start getting himself ready in the mornings, which means he needs to be able to easily access what he needs.

Before moving clothing around, this part of his wardrobe contained backpacks, school and non school clothing mixed together, out of season clothing, wellies, and more laundry products.

To make his wardrobe work better for him, the following was done:

  • Out of season clothes were placed in a container and stored on the highest shelf in the wardrobe, a shelf that’s not easily accessible, so perfect for items that aren’t used often.
  • School uniforms, socks, and pyjamas were moved to the top shelf, because these are clothes that I get for Ryan when he needs them.
  • Non school clothes were moved to the middle shelf, as these are the clothes that I want Ryan to start dressing himself in, so having them at his eye line makes this task much easier.
  • The shoes on the lower shelf were moved to the shoe rack at the front door, and the winter accessories were placed in the out of season storage container, allowing this shelf to be used to store additional laundry products.

Organising kid’s toys

The last part of Ryan’s wardrobe has five narrow shelves in it, which stored the following:

  • Baby sleeping bags and black out blinds
  • Larger clothing, Play-Doh products
  • Activity books, arts and craft supplies, markers and pencils, games
  • Puzzles and games that I was intending to rotate other toys with
  • Magnetic tiles

Here’s what I did to reorganise this part of his wardrobe to make it less cluttered, and a more functional part of his room:

  • The sleeping bags and black out blinds were moved to where my toddler’s clothes are kept, leaving this shelf empty.
  • Larger clothing was put in storage, the arts and crafts and toys from other shelves were moved here, with the Play-Doh products that were already here.
  • Activity books and markers and pencils were moved to the top orange storage box, and bulkier toys and puzzles were moved here.
  • The puzzles and games that were already on this shelf stayed here, but I took everything out of their boxes and stored the contents in bags, which I placed together in a box, making it much neater and saving space.
  • Magnetic tiles (not pictured as they were being played with).

Overall I’m happy with Ryan’s wardrobe reorganisation, as I feel it’s much more functional, less cluttered, and will allow Ryan to be able to more easily get ready himself, which is what I wanted to achieve prior to starting it.
