How to organise your home in 3 easy steps

How to organise your home in 3 easy steps

Having an organised home doesn’t have to be something that you love the idea of, but you don’t think you’ll ever achieve.

For me an organised home is an ongoing project, but I always feel less stressed when I’m not surrounded by clutter, and getting things as in order as they can be with two kids at the end of the night is something that can happen.

I believe that there’s no one way to organise your home. How you organise your home is entirely up to you, and is a reflection of what feels comfortable and easiest for you at your stage of life.

However, I do think that organising our homes can be done in three easy steps, which once completed will allow you to feel as uncluttered and organised as you can be.

If you’d like to learn more about how to organise your home, then I hope that this post provides you with some inspiration on how you can organise your home in 3 easy steps, which once done will allow you to feel calmer and more settled in your home.

STEP ONE DECLUTTER

For me, decluttering means removing any items from my home that I don’t love, that I don’t use, or that don’t add any value to my, or my family’s life.

Decluttering your home can be as easy or complicated as you like, there’s not one size decluttering solution for everyone.

Some people love to declutter their home based upon tried and tested methods, some like to make a detailed plan first, some like me love to declutter room by room, and some like to declutter their whole home over one weekend.

However you like to declutter, and if you are about to declutter your home for the first time, I recommend asking yourself the following questions for any item you are not sure about decluttering, and if you answer no to any of them, then it’s time for the item to go.

  • Have I used the item in the past six months?
  • Would I miss this item if I donated it?
  • Does keeping this item allow me to have the less cluttered, simpler home that I envision?

Once you’ve decided to declutter an item immediately put it in a bag. Once the bag is full get the bag out of your house so you’re not tempted to take the decluttered item out and keep it in your house.

Sometimes I have bags of decluttered items in my car for a couple of days until I’m able to drop them off at a charity store.

If an item is broken or damaged in anyway then it’s best to recycle it.

STEP TWO ORGANISATION

This is the fun part of organising your home, the part where you find ways to store and organise all the items that you haven’t decluttered.

It’s best to do this after you declutter, so you know exactly what you have to organise and so you buy appropriately sized storage solutions.

This step in how to organise your home involves organising your belongings into similar categories in storage containers, on shelves, or other organisational tools.

Or if organisational tools aren’t needed, it simply means finding places for your items, and storing them in ways that make it easy to find them, or put them away when not needed.

Some great examples of ways that you can organise your belongings after you’ve decluttered include:

  • Drawer inserts to store socks, or boxes to separate underwear from the rest of your clothing
  • A spice rack for your spices
  • Stair baskets so you can take multiple items up and down stairs
  • Storage containers for seasonal decorations
  • Drawer inserts to separate cutlery for kitchen drawers
  • Wicker baskets for toys
  • Book shelves
  • Small containers that hold items you use every day
  • Open top laundry baskets which are placed in areas where clothes are removed. I have one in my kitchen so I can put stained kids clothes in it

You don’t always have to buy a storage solution to help organise your home.

Folding clothes neatly, or even creating the habit of regularly decluttering and tidying up each night can be just as effective.

STEP THREE MAINTENANCE

Now that your home has been decluttered and you’ve found great ways to store and organise similar items it’s time to maintain your home so your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

A great way to maintain your newly organised home is to think before you buy. Before buying something ask yourself:

  • Do you really need it?
  • Do you already have something similar you can use instead?
  • Does it fit in with the look you want for your home?

Everything that you have in your home requires some sort of maintenance, whether it’s dusting, cleaning, servicing, or similar, everything takes up physical space and your time.

This is really good to remember before you purchase something, because if it’s going to take a lot to maintain it, you may not want to buy it.

Also, try not to purchase something with the thought that you’ll find a place for it. If you haven’t previously identified an area of your home that needs something, then you’ll only be buying items that will add to the future clutter of your home.

Finally, make time each night to clear away clutter you bought into your home during the day, such as school bags, groceries, and laundry.

When I do this I like to carry a laundry basket around the house and I fill it with items that shouldn’t be in a room, and then put them where they should go.

I hope this post has provided you with a plan on how you can organise your home, and maintain your hard work so you home stays as organised as you like, for a very long time.
