How to organise baby clothes

How to organise baby clothes

Baby’s clothes are so adorable and so small, but surprisingly they can require quite a bit of storage space.

Storage space can be hard to come by, especially if like my baby, your baby shares your room, and your drawers.

Today I’m sharing some great ways to organise baby clothes, if like me you are short on space, or if you’d like to change the way you currently organise your own baby clothes.

HOW TO ORGANISE BABY CLOTHES

I allocated two drawers for my baby Thomas’ clothes, which were the top two drawers of Nick’s and my chest of drawers, as Thomas is sleeping in our room and we don’t have enough space for Thomas to have his own chest of drawers.

After reorganising the remaining drawers, and moving things to the hanging shelf in our cupboard it was time to put the baby clothes away in some sort of organised manner.

Here’s how I’ve organised my baby clothes:

NURSERY DRAWER ORGANISATION

This is what’s in the top left hand drawer:

Here are some great ways to organise baby clothes so you can maximise the space you have, as well as some nursery drawer organisation tips to ensure that you organise your nursery drawers in a way that is practical and accessible.

I’ve organised my baby’s clothes in this drawer, as it’s underneath the baby change mat, which makes it easy to grab clothes whilst holding the baby.

I used drawer dividers in this drawer, with a large one holding all the baby onesies, which Thomas wears to sleep.

Next to this divider is another divider of the same size, which has my baby’s trousers in it, with thick trousers and thinner trousers piled into separate groups. Behind the trousers are Thomas’ onesies that have no legs and long sleeves, which are with the trousers as these two items of clothing are worn together.

The two smaller boxes contain socks and hats.

Behind the dividers I’ve stored the onesie and hat Thomas wore for the first time, and my hospital wristbands to store somewhere else later on.

This is what’s in the other drawer on the right hand side:

NURSERY BABY CHANGE STATION ORGANISATION

I’ve used the top of our chest of drawers as a baby change station, which I feel is a great use of space because it means that I don’t have to buy and store a baby change table, and it means Thomas is at waist height when I change him.

My baby change station consists of a baby change mat, which is placed at the end of the chest of drawers so I’ve got plenty of room to move around, with wipes and sanitiser at the end of the mat for easy reach.

At the opposite end of the chest of drawers I’ve got a large grey basket which has nappies, dummies, dummy holders, bonjela, brush, comb, nail clippers, thermometer, anti bac wipes, and a NoseFrida in it.

Having these items as part of the baby change station, means I can get them if needed in the middle of the night without disturbing Thomas too much.

NURSERY DRAWER ORGANISATION TIPS

Here are some handy nursery drawer organisation tips that I found super helpful when organising my own nursery drawers.

STORE OUTFITS TOGETHER

Storing clothing next to each other that’s worn as an outfit, makes dressing your baby quick and easy.

For example, I’ve stored trousers and long sleeved onesies next to each other as Thomas wears this combination pretty much every day, other combinations include long sleeve tops and jumpers, or leggings and dresses.

USE DRAWER ORGANISERS

A great way to organise baby clothes and make your nursery drawers less cluttered is to use drawer organisers, or containers that you already own.

If you buy drawer dividers make sure you measure your draws first so you know what drawer organisers to buy, and look for organisers with high sides so you can stack clothing and fit more in.

If you have larger items like blankets and muslin clothes, like what’s in my second drawer, then drawer organisers may not be needed as the items may fit better when folded on their own.

If you are very limited on space, then these larger items may be better stored in a basket on the floor.

HAVE A LAUNDRY HAMPER NEARBY

Having a laundry hamper near where you change your baby is very handy.

There will be many outfit changes during the day, and being able to throw dirty clothes straight into a hamper means less things to think about later on, and gives your space some order, especially if your baby change station is in your bedroom.

MAKE CHANGES WHEN NECESSARY

The best way to organise baby clothes is to do it in a way that works for you and make changes when needed.

For example, when I first organised these drawers, I rolled up all the clothes, as you can see in the main image. I quickly realised that rolling clothes wasn’t working as the clothes kept coming apart and falling down.

I then started folding the clothes instead and changed my organisers around, so the larger ones held the larger pieces of clothing, and the smaller boxes held socks and hats, which worked much better.

STORE BABY CLOTHES BY SEASON

If you have limited drawer space like me, then it may be worthwhile storing any items that aren’t worn a lot during a particular season somewhere else, such as dresses, or short sleeve tops.

You can do this by using storage boxes or sealed bags, which you store under your bed.

USE WIPEABLE MATERIAL

Make sure the baby mat in your baby change station is wipeable, you’ll know very quickly why this is important.

HAVE NEW SIZES READY

A couple of months before Thomas is due to move up to the next size, I schedule time in my planner to buy what I need, wash them, and then have them ready to move into my drawers when the time comes for him to start wearing them.

By doing this I should be ready to put Thomas in the next size whenever he’s ready.
