The 5th of November is Bonfire Night in the UK, which means there are many local firework displays and bonfires that you can attend with your family.
However, some younger children, mine included, are scared of fireworks, which makes attending Bonfire Night celebrations something that isn’t really possible.
If attending a Bonfire Night celebration is something you can’t do, or don’t want to do, you can still enjoy this night, by doing any of these Bonfire Night activities for kids, which can be done in the safety and warmth of your home.
Fireworks in a jar
Fireworks in a jar is an easy Bonfire Night activity for toddlers that they’ll have a lot of fun making, and comprises of many things you may already have on hand.
All you need are:
- A clear jar
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Food colouring
Once you have everything you need, simply fill the jar ¾ full with water, add about 4 tablespoons of oil, then add 3-4 drops of food colouring, and mix it all together.
If this is something you’d like to try, here is a fireworks in a jar tutorial.
Firework videos
There are many firework videos online that you can put on your TV so you can have fireworks playing in the background, but at a volume you can control.
Backyard fireworks
If you still want to experience real fireworks but you don’t want to attend a busy, cold local fireworks display, you can light your own fireworks in your backyard.
If this is something you want to do, make sure you use your fireworks exactly as the instructions advise, and make sure you follow the advice given by RoSPA.
Sparklers and glow sticks
An alternative to at home fireworks is to light sparklers, or get glow sticks, which are both a safe and fun way for kids to enjoy Bonfire Night at home.
If you have a toddler, you can put their sparkler into a potato, so they hold the potato and not the sparkler when the sparkler is alight.
