How to declutter your life

How to declutter your life

Often when we read or speak about decluttering, it’s in relation to decluttering our homes.

However, decluttering our lives is just as important as decluttering our homes, as both forms of decluttering allow us to feel calmer, and more in control of our surroundings and time.

If you’d like to declutter your life but don’t know where to start, here are some ideas that you could try.

ONLY SAY YES TO THINGS YOU REALLY WANT TO DO

Our lives are full of commitments, from family, home, work, friends, and the commitments we make to ourselves, making us feel overwhelmed, fast.

As a result, we can feel as though the majority of our time is spent meeting the needs of others instead of our own.

Of course there are certain commitments that we have to do, even if we don’t want to (hello laundry and school run!), but instead of saying yes to everything that you’re asked to do, try asking yourself if you really need to, or want to do what you’re being asked, and if the answer is no, then say no.

ESTABLISH SOME ROUTINES

Adding routines to your day by doing certain things at certain times, and in a particular order, can allow you to feel more in control.

Routines help you to declutter your life by keeping you focused on getting things done, making sure your priorities are top of mind, allowing you to work towards achieving any goals you’ve set, and even prioritise time for yourself.

SPEND TIME WITH THOSE WHO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD

Who you spend your time with has a huge impact on the way you feel, and the things you think about.

Spending time with people who are positive, support you, and make you feel good after spending time with them is a great way to declutter your life, as you are surrounding yourself with people who make you happy, instead of dragging you down.

WRITE DAILY TO DO LISTS

Writing daily to do lists is a great way to organise your time, clear away mental clutter, and look at everything you need to get done.

You can keep your daily to do list on paper, digitally, or combine both, it doesn’t matter what you use to plan your day, whatever you choose just has to work for you.

A great way to use to do lists to declutter your life is to break up all of your tasks into smaller tasks, so each day you work towards things you need to get done, and remove things that are no longer important.

UNPLUG AND RELAX

Unplugging from technology and taking time to relax every day can do wonders for your life.

A way that you can do this is by deciding a time every day that you will turn your devices off and do something else like watch tv or read, or just having your phone away from you when you eat a meal.

For me, I turn my phone off every night at 9.30pm and watch TV with Nick.

DECLUTTER YOUR HOME

Decluttering your home is also part of decluttering your life, as it can make you feel calmer and more relaxed in your surroundings and headspace.

Decluttering your home doesn’t have to be a big task, even if you just have 10 minutes a week to tackle an area that annoys you, over time the 10 minutes adds up and before you know it you’ll be motivated to tackle another area.
