Our days can very quickly get out of control, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and unproductive.

However, adding routines into our days allows us to overcome these feelings, by doing certain things at a particular time, and in a particular order.

If you’d like to know more about the benefits of routines, then here are 8 reasons why having a routine is important, and how they can make you feel more in control, and less overwhelmed.

ROUTINES MAKE US MORE EFFICIENT

Routines set out the steps that we need to take to get certain tasks done, which means we don’t need to waste time thinking about what to do next, or spend time deciding on what we need to do.

WE CAN ALLOCATE OUR TIME BETTER

When we have routines as part of our day, we know how long it takes to get them done, and therefore how much time we have left to work on anything else we need to get done.

OUR DAYS ARE MORE STRUCTURED

Routines provide structure by letting us know what we need to do, when we need to do it, how we’re going to do it, and how much time we need.

WE CAN GET INTO GOOD HABITS

Routines help us develop good habits by allowing us to repeat desired activities until they become something we do without realising.

For example, flossing our teeth every morning is a routine that develops the habit of good hygiene.

WE BECOME MORE PRODUCTIVE

Developing routines for things we need to do, and doing them before anything else, means we’re spending our time on the things that are priorities, before spending time on things that hinder our productivity, or stops us from reaching our goals.

WE STAY FOCUSED

Having a routine allows us to stay focused on the task at hand because we know exactly what needs to be done.

WE CAN LEARN TO MAKE THINGS WORK FOR US

For routines to work they need to be enjoyable and actually work.

If you don’t enjoy your routine, or if it doesn’t do what you need it to do, then it can be modified until you love it and it works.

Modifying routines is how we learn what works and what doesn’t work for us. It’s a great way to get to know how to best meet our needs.

WE HAVE TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER

One of the best reasons why having a routine is important is because it allows us to make time for the things that matter, by creating routines for these things.

We won’t be able to make time for the things that matter everyday as unexpected things do come up, but on the days that we can make time for things that matter we feel a greater sense of balance.
