HOW TO ORGANISE YOUR WARDROBE

How you organise your wardrobe needs to make sense to you.

As long as you can easily put items of clothing away, and find something when you need it, then keeping your wardrobe organised and tidy will be something that you can easily maintain.

Here are three ways that you can organise your wardrobe, you may even like to try a couple until you find the one that works best for you.

Organising your wardrobe by clothing type

One way to organise your wardrobe is by clothing type, which means all trousers are put away together, as are all jumpers, t-shirts etc.

Organising your wardrobe this way means that you won’t have a pair of trousers in between jumpers, or a t-shirt mixed in with all of your jumpers.

Some examples of the types of clothing that can be stored together include:

  • T-shirts, blouses, and shirts
  • Long and short skirts
  • Long and short dresses
  • Smart and casual trousers
  • Denim

Organising your wardrobe by colour

Another way to organise your wardrobe is by colour, so for example, you may group all dark clothes together, all light clothes together, all blue together, all grey together etc.

You can also do this if you decide to organise your wardrobe by type, by hanging all trousers together in order from darkest to lightest.

Organising your wardrobe by season

If you live somewhere with definite seasons, i.e. it very rarely gets cold in summer, then you may like to organise your wardrobe by season.

This involves only having clothing in your wardrobe that’s in season, and putting away all other items of clothing.

So for example, in summer you’d only have summer clothes in your wardrobe, everything else would be stored away in a storage box and then put in your wardrobe when that season starts.

WHAT TO FOLD OR HANG

Just like deciding how to organise your wardrobe, deciding what to fold or hang also needs to make sense to you, and is based upon personal preference, and the amount of space you have.

As a guide, here are clothing items that are best hung:

  • Non denim trousers, which can be hung in half if needed
  • Lightweight dresses
  • Skirts
  • Blouses
  • Jackets
  • Blazers
  • Anything that wrinkles easily

Here are clothing items that are best folded:

  • Jeans
  • Heavy dresses
  • T-shirts
  • Jumpers
  • Exercise clothes
  • Shorts

When putting your clothing away, it’s a great idea to put your most worn items front and centre, and anything that you don’t wear as often on higher shelves or away from eye level.

CLOTHING STORAGE IDEAS

Once your wardrobe is organised, you may like to go one step further and find some clothing storage solutions to make it even easier to find things, and to make your wardrobe even more aesthetically pleasing.

Here are some great clothing storage ideas to try:

  • Containers or fabric boxes that can be placed on shelves or in drawers, which keep like items together
  • Draw dividers to divide different items of clothing in your drawers, including socks, underwear, and gloves
  • Hanging shelves that go inside your wardrobe and can store folded jumpers, t-shirts, denim, and scarves
  • Trouser hangers, skirt hangers, belt hangers, tie hangers, and scarf hangers to hang these items neatly in your wardrobe, and allowing you to save space
  • Velvet hangers are great to use if you’re after a streamlined look and want to save space, clothing also doesn’t slip off them
  • Large plastic containers or vacuum bags are great for clothing that’s out of season and can be hidden under your bed
  • Hooks for the back of your bedroom door can hold jackets or bags
  • Shoe racks or shoe trays can store shoes on the bottom of your wardrobe
  • Over door storage is great for shoes, accessories, or small items

I hope you’ve found some great ways to organise your wardrobe, and may even consider trying out some clothing storage ideas.
