How to read more

How to read more

Reading is one of my favourite things to do, but as I’ve gotten older and my responsibilities have changed, the amount of time I have to read is less than it used to be.

However, I’m a strong believer in doing things that matter to you as often as you can, and reading is something that matters to me a lot.

If reading is something you love but would like to discover some ways on how to read more, so you can spend as much time reading as possible, then here are some great things that you can try.

CREATE A TO READ LIST

A to read list is a list of all the books that you’d like to read at some point, it can be referred to whenever you need a new book.

You can find books to add to this list by reading book recommendations (like the one below under related post), or finding books that your favourite movies or TV shows have been based on, or you can add all of the books to it that are written by your favourite author.

MAKE READING PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

A terrific way to read more is to make it part of your daily routine.

For example, every night I make reading part of my night time routine, where I get ready for bed, wash my face, read for at least 10 minutes, then go to bed.

You don’t have to make it a big part of your routine, dedicating even just 10 minutes a day to reading at some pre determined time will turn it into a habit that you soon won’t even think about doing, and you’ll soon look forward to each day.

READ WHILST YOUR CHILDREN ARE BUSY

The amount of time in a day that children entertain themselves is very small, so instead of feeling as though you need to fill it helping them with something, or doing something else, take some time out for yourself and read a little bit.

Reading is the perfect thing to do when your children are playing independently because it can be done in the same room as them, so you can step in and help them if you need to.

I know this is easier said than done, as whenever my children are playing on their own I feel like I should be playing with them, but then I remind myself that alone time for our children is great for their independence and creativity skills, and is important for our own sanity.

LISTEN TO AUDIO BOOKS

Listening to audio books is a really great way to read more, because you can listen to books as you do other things like household chores or even driving, things that prevent you from holding a physical book.

CARRY MULTIPLE BOOKS WITH YOU

Reading books on a kindle, phone, or any other electrical device means that you can carry multiple books with you wherever you go. This means you can read whilst in line, out and about, on a break, or at any time you find yourself out of home with some time on your hands.

Another benefit to carrying multiple books with you is you can easily switch to another book if you become bored with one you’re currently reading, or suddenly finish your current book.

SET SOME READING GOALS

If you find it hard to stay motivated to read, then perhaps setting some reading goals may encourage you to read more.

You can set goals for the numbers of pages you’d like to read each day, how many chapters you want to read in a week, or how many books you’d like to read in a year.

A great place to set a yearly reading goal, or create a to read list is on Goodreads.

JOIN A BOOK CLUB

Joining a book club is another way to read more, as it forces you to finish a book by a certain time so you can join in the book club discussion.

Plus, joining a book club allows you to meet other book lovers where you can learn about future books you may like to read.

If you’re interested in joining a book club there are many that you can join online such as searching for them in Facebook or Instagram, or creating one with your friends.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO READ

Scheduling time to read each day by treating it like an appointment that you can’t cancel is a great way to read more.

It forces you to spend time each day reading, making it a priority in your life.
