Kedleston Hall, National Trust

A day out at Kedleston Hall National Trust

Over the summer we spent a weekend in Derby, and as part of our time there we visited a couple of National Trust properties, one of them was Kedleston Hall, which is located in Derbyshire.

Kedleston Hall was designed to impress, and houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and furnishings.

George Curzon, the Viceroy of India between 1899 and 1905, inherited the house that stands on the property, and filled it with objects that he collected during his travels in South Asia and the Middle East during his time leading the British rule in India.

To enter the grounds at Kedleston Hall, we had to drive up a long driveway and cross over the Robert Adam Bridge, and once over the bridge we got our first look at Kedleston Hall, and it was stunning!

We were really excited to get our day started, but before we did, we had a picnic lunch on one of the tables just outside the entrance.

Once ready we headed straight to the house, but sadly it was closed as there was a sign out the front saying it’s only open Friday to Monday. So instead, we walked around the back of the house where there was a church, a small bookshop, and then a huge garden filled with wildflowers and sculptures.

The garden is currently undergoing a lot of work to bring it back to its 18th century glory using old plans and plant lists, so it would be great to come back at a later date and see how much it’s changed.

After exploring the gardens Nick and I had a cream tea, and the boys had ice cream from The Great Kitchen Restaurant, which we ate at a table in front of the house. It was a nice ending to our day out at Kedleston Hall.

One area of Kedleston Hall that we didn’t get a chance to explore was the 800+ acres of parkland that has wildflowers, lakes, livestock, walking routes, woods, birds, and bridges.

As we didn’t get a chance to see the house or explore the parklands we’ll definitely be going back to Kedleston Hall at some point.

Kedleston Hall is located on Kedleston Road, Derby, Derbyshire, if driving there the SatNav postcode is DE22 5JD. For more information on Kedleston Hall please visit their website.
