5 things to do in the morning before your kids wake up

Sometimes the last thing I want to do is wake up before Ryan.

Ryan’s late bedtime hour means that he’s usually up between 7-8am, so the thought of getting up before him when I can have a lie in is the last thing on my mind.

However, the days when I’m woken up by Ryan are the days where I am the least productive, which makes me frustrated at the end of the day as I wasn’t able to get as much done as I needed to.

They’re also the days where I feel the most agitated, as I haven’t had a chance to have even just a small amount of time to myself.

Which is why I feel that getting up, even just a little bit before Ryan and having time to myself, or time to get things done, sets me up for a much more productive and happier day.

So, today I’m sharing five things to do in the morning before your kids get up, so you can ease into your day and get it off to a good start.

YOGA

If there’s only one thing that I can fit in before Ryan gets up, then I want that thing to be yoga.

I often do a 20-30 minute at home yoga class on YouTube from Yoga with Adriene.

If I don’t get a chance to do this before Ryan wakes up, then I know it won’t happen.

Other exercise ideas you may like to try if exercise is something you’d like to do before your kids wake up include:

  • Pilates
  • Core strengthening
  • Running on the spot
  • Full body workouts

A search on YouTube for at home workouts provides heaps of great inspiration for some at home exercise.

MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Before the noise of the day starts is an ideal time to make some time for yourself.

Some time out ideas that you may like to try in the morning are included in this post 30 ways to schedule self-care into your daily routine.

Other time out ideas before the kids wake up include:

  • Having a delicious breakfast
  • Enjoying a hot drink before it gets cold
  • Catching up on your reading
  • Watching TV
  • Reading the paper
  • Enjoying the silence

PLAN YOUR DAY

I love a good plan and plan my days in my bullet journal regularly.

I find that on the days when I haven’t made any plans Ryan and I just stumble from one thing to another and we spend a lot of time being bored.

Plans that you make could include chores that need to be done, meals you need to prepare, and an outing that you’d like to do.

If you plan to go on an outing, it can be as simple as taking a stroll around an arts and craft store, getting groceries, or going to the library.

GET SOME CHORES DONE

Waking up to do chores is not something that anyone really wants to do, but unfortunately it’s a household job that needs doing and what better time then the morning to just get it over and done with.

When I’ve managed to put a load of washing on before Ryan wakes up I feel a sense of accomplishment first thing in the morning, which makes me motivated to continue to be productive throughout the day.

Other chores that could be done in the morning before your kids wake up include:

  • Changing the bed
  • Giving the bathrooms a quick wipe down
  • Doing dishes from the night before
  • Getting breakfast, lunch or dinner prepped

GET READY

Whenever I can I get ready before Ryan wakes up, as it means I can spend a little bit more time actually thinking about what to wear.

I don’t have kids so I can’t relate to that part but I’m always more productive in the morning and in the hours before 12! Yoga With Adriene is my go-to. I always start my day with one of her practices!

Same, I always start my day with Yoga with Adriene, I love a good stretch in the morning. I think I’m also more productive before 12, as soon as I have lunch I feel like it’s the end of the day!
