10 things to love about preschoolers

The preschool age (3-5 years old) is a mixed bag. There are days when your preschooler is a joy, and then there are days when they’re not. Whatever day you have with them, there are just so many things to love about preschoolers that make this age a fun stage to go through.

Here are 10 things to love about preschoolers, which is why this stage of motherhood is one that we can look back at with fondness.

I much prefer parenting an older child, and here’s why

YOU CAN START TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS

During the preschool years your preschooler’s language skills improve dramatically, which means that you can start to have conversations with them, where you can find out what they like, what they don’t like, what their interests, are and even how they want to spend their day.

An increase in language skills also means your preschooler will come out with the funniest things, but they may also become brutally honest and even make some inappropriate observations in public, which can be funny but also mortifying.

THEY’RE DETERMINED TO USE THEIR NEW SKILLS

With increasing language skills also comes other newly developed skills, which your preschooler will want to use all the time, which eventually means there’s less they need you to help them with.

By preschool age your child is able to better feed themselves, do up buttons, and even perhaps dress themselves, which are fantastic skills to have, even if it makes getting out of the door much slower.

Even though it can be frustrating watching them struggle with something they’re determined to do, in the long run life will be much easier when they become quicker at doing things, and don’t need as much help.

THEY’RE REALLY EXCITED TO LEARN

Another of the things to love about preschoolers is their excitement to learn about anything, from colours, shapes, animals, and the world around them.

With this excitement comes the question why, which they can ask about anything you tell them over and over again, which can get tiring fast.

I remember my now 5 year old thinking it was funny just to say why about everything without even caring what the answer was.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO HELP THEM IN SOFT PLAYS ANYMORE

When my son was about 3.5 years old he started to go into soft plays by himself, and didn’t need my help to slide down slides, or climb on things, and it was one of my happiest moments ever because my poor body really hated soft plays.

THEY LOVE CUDDLES

One of my favourite things to love about preschoolers is that they love cuddles. Even if they’ve been challenging during the day, a cuddle makes everything worth it.

THEY FORGIVE YOUR OUTBURSTS

The tantrums that come with preschoolers can be tough, and I have on many occasions had to tell my preschooler off, or not give into his requests, which was hard on everyone.

But with preschoolers, whatever has been said to them, or whatever they’ve not been allowed to do is forgotten about by the end of the day. They have a level of unconditional love that is unlike any other.

THEY ACTUALLY EAT

Most preschoolers are willing to try anything once, and will eat meals as well as snacks.

This may not last long, as some preschoolers like food more than others, but when your preschooler loves food enjoy it, because as they get older they get fussy and want to eat more of the things they shouldn’t.

THEY LOVE TO SING AND DANCE

Preschoolers love to sing and dance all the time, even in public, and they’re not embarrassed by it.

Their uninhibited movements are so fun to watch, and sadly as they get older they become more self-conscious, and they loose these cute little trait.

THEY’RE REALLY CREATIVE

The preschool age is typically the age where a child becomes really creative, and is able to find solutions to things that you’d never think about.

At this age they can turn a box into anything, and even hold tea parties for all of their toys, where the teacups are other toys.

This age is a great time to step back and watch how your preschooler tackles their boredom, and listen to the answers they give you to problems they need solved.

THEY BECOME MORE INTERESTED IN BOOKS

Another of the things to love about preschoolers is that they develop a love for books, and want you to read anything and everything.

This means that before bedtime you can read books to help them sleep, or you can read together during the day, the more you read the better their creativity and language development will get.
