12 Things to love about newborn phase

The newborn phase isn’t always a joyous one.

Some days feel really long, and by the end of most of them you can feel like you’ve achieved very little.

However, there is so much to love about the newborn phase, which we can often forget on the days where we are not enjoying the newborn phase as much as we’d like to, or as much as we thought we would.

So, to help us remember all the reasons to love newborns, when we are having a day where we may not be feeling the love so much, here are 12 things to love about the newborn phase, which both you and I can refer to when we need a little reminder.

TINY NEWBORN BODY FEATURES

I love how a newborn’s head and eyes look so big compared to their smaller bodies. I also love how round newborn’s faces are, how their cheeks wobble when pushing them in their buggy, how messy their hair can get, their thick legs and arms, tiny nails, and lips that can get very pouty.

FIRST NEWBORN SMILE

There’s nothing cuter than receiving your first newborn smile, purely because your newborn is just so happy that you are with them.

My first newborn, Ryan, who is now a preschooler, has a gorgeous smile, which started when he was about 8 weeks old, and it’s a part of him that I hope he never looses.

NEWBORN FINGER GRAB

My second newborn, Thomas, who is nearly five months old, loves to grab my finger on one hand, and thumb on the other when he’s having his bottle. It’s the cutest thing ever, and is something that always makes me love the newborn phase even if I’m having a bad day.

NEWBORN GURGLES

I forgot how cute newborn gurgles and random noises can be. There is no rhyme or reason for them, but when a newborn makes them, it’s just so adorable.

NO CHEEKINESS

More of a reason to enjoy newborn gurgles is the fact that a newborn isn’t able to talk back to you, hence be cheeky.

NEWBORN OUTFITS

One word, onesies! I love how newborn’s can be dressed in onesies for the majority of the newborn phase.

It makes dressing newborns quick and easy, and if you don’t feel like dressing your newborn in a onesie, there is an unlimited amount of equally adorable newborn clothes to put on them.

NOT HAVING TO PACK SNACKS

As a newborn can’t eat, getting out of the house is easier as you don’t have to try to squeeze snacks and food into your nappy bag, as well as all the other newborn things you already have to pack with you.

THEY STAY STILL

Believe me, once your child starts moving, it’s non stop action in your household, so having a newborn that isn’t able to crawl, walk and run, makes your day so much easier and calmer.

NEWBORN SLEEP

I’m definitely not talking about night wakings here, because that is definitely not something that many people love about the newborn phase, but I’m talking about the peacefulness that comes across newborns when they are finally asleep.

I love the way newborns look like dolls when they sleep, the rising of their chests, and the way the sleep with their arms in the air. This must be where the phase I slept like a baby comes from.

BABY WEARING

Baby wearing is one of the things I’m doing differently with baby number two, and it’s one of my favourite things about the newborn phase.

As well as it allowing you to actually get things done, baby wearing means that you can feel the heat your newborn gives off when they sleep, making for a nice warm bonding session for you both.

SLOW DAILY PACE

Having a newborn makes you slow down, as your day revolves around their feeding and sleeping schedules for some time.

This is something that I do find a bit hard, as I like to keep as busy as I can during the days, but I also want to appreciate this newborn phase and enjoy the slower pace of life before my newborn gets bigger and life becomes busier.

DUMMY SUCKING

I love the movement of my newborn’s mouth when he sucks his dummy, and how it immediately calms him down when he’s distressed or screaming.
