Baby’s first Christmas, how to make it memorable

This year will be my first Christmas with a four year old and a baby, and now that my four year old, Ryan, is old enough to enjoy the day, I want to make Christmas as memorable as it can be.

My baby Thomas will be 7 months old at Christmas, so the day won’t really mean too much more to him than other days, however, I’d still like to make it memorable so we can look back on his first Christmas when he’s older.

If like me you’re wondering how to celebrate your baby’s first Christmas, so it’s memorable for everyone, then here are some great ideas that you can try.

With these ideas, there is no need to do them all. You may do some this year, some other years, some not at all, or you may even turn some into Christmas traditions.

BABY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS PHOTO SHOOT

This year I’m planning on taking photos of Thomas on his own, as well as with Ryan.

Some photos you can take are:

  • Photos of your baby sitting in front of, or laying under the Christmas tree
  • Sleeping photos in Christmas pyjamas
  • Baby getting into wrapping paper
  • Photos of your baby wearing a Santa hat, holding a stocking, or inside a wrapped box
  • Capturing your baby staring at the Christmas tree lights
  • A family photo in front of the tree
  • A photo of your baby enjoying their Christmas meal

You may even decide to choose one or many of these photos to make a baby’s first Christmas card that you can send to family and friend’s to thank them for any gifts they gave your baby.

Or you may even turn some of the photos into a baby’s first Christmas photo book.

BABY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS ACTIVITY IDEAS

Some fun Christmas themed activities that even young babies can participate in at Christmas include:

  • Jingling bells
  • Playing with soft Christmas decorations, or Christmas themed sensory toys
  • Sticking ribbons to their clothes
  • Feeling their first snow drop
  • Looking at flashing lights in a box
  • Making handprint and footprint Christmas cards
  • Scrunching up wrapping paper

BABY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Here are some fantastic Christmas traditions you may like to start this Christmas:

  • Purchase a gift that they can play with the next few Christmases such as a train set, Christmas book, or a musical plush toy
  • Buy a personalised Christmas tree decoration, that you can give them for their own tree when they’re older
  • Hang a personalised stocking, this year I’ve purchased one with a T and one with an R
  • Read a Christmas themed bedtime story on Christmas Eve
  • Dress your baby in a Christmas outfit that’s the same as or similar to one their sibling or siblings are wearing
  • Get a photo with Santa (above is Ryan’s Santa photo at four months old)
  • Make a baby friendly advent calendar with activities your baby and sibling or siblings can do together
  • Drive around the neighbourhood looking at Christmas lights

BABY’S FIRST CHRISTMAS FOODS TO TRY

If you have a baby that will be able to try some food at Christmas, some great first foods to try are:

  • Mashed potato
  • Sweet potato
  • Turkey
  • Green beans
  • Carrots
  • Asparagus
  • Sausages

I hope you’ve found some great ideas on how you can make a baby’s first Christmas memorable.

This Christmas I’m going to make an effort to stress less and enjoy more, as having young children to make the day special for is something that won’t last forever.

How will you make your baby’s first Christmas memorable?
