School bags hold a lot, and quite often the things they hold can be left all over our home’s floor. However, this can be avoided if you have some school bag storage ideas on hand.
If you’d like some help organising your kid’s school bags, or would like to get organised for back to school, or simply keep your house tidy, here are some school bag organisation ideas that will help.

School bag storage ideas – shelves
Shelves are a great way to organise school bags as well as other school supplies, which is one way to make the school run less stressful, because everything for school is in the one place.
Things that can be placed in shelves, as well as school bags, include:
- Coats
- Shoes
- School lunchboxes
- Water bottles
- Homework
- School books
Custom built shelves
Another type of shelving you can use to organise school bags are custom built shelves, which are shelves that you have custom made to fit the items you want to store in them.
This school bag storage idea is typically built into a specific area of your home, such as a garage, or a room you access a lot.
Bench and baskets
A bench that has space for baskets underneath it is a highly practical school bag storage idea, because as well as storing school supplies in the baskets, your kids can sit on the bench to put their coats or shoes on, or take them off.
If this sounds like a great option for your home, here is a storage bench idea, and here is another storage bench idea, that both already have with baskets in them.
Plastic drawers
A cost effective school bag storage idea are plastic drawers, which are a number of plastic drawers stacked on top of, or next to each other, and held together in a tower, like these IKEA plastic drawers or these plastic drawers, which are the ones I use in my home.
They’re also compact so they don’t take up much space, and can be easily moved around your home if you decide to change the location of your school bags and school supplies.
Hooks
Hooks are what I use to hold my son’s school bag, which I love because they don’t take up too much room.
Hooks can be nailed into a wall, or a door, or you can use over door hooks if you don’t want to use nails.
Coat racks
Another great way to store school bags is to use a coat rack, so your kids can get their school bag and coat as soon as they head out the door, or come back through it.
Toy boxes
Toy boxes are a more unique way to organise school bags and school supplies, which can be kept in your kid’s bedroom.
There are many different school bag storage ideas that you can choose from, that suit the amount of storage space you have in your home.
Some of these include shelves, a bench and baskets, or plastic drawers, which can store school supplies as well as school bags.
If you’re short on space, using hooks, over door hooks, or coat racks are great school bag storage solutions, or for a more unique idea, you could store school bags and school supplies in a toy box.

I never thought of using a coat rack to hang a backpack. Definitely better than having another hole in the wall.
Oh definitely, I’ve got a lot of holes in the walls already, so a coat rack is a good solution.
