5 fun and easy Pancake Day activities for kids
Last Updated on November 16, 2024
Pancakes are one of my family’s favourite things to cook and eat, and what better time to celebrate this special treat than Pancake Day.
As well as cooking and eating pancakes, there are also some fun and easy Pancake Day activities for kids that you can do on Pancake Day.
Here are 5 Pancake Day activities for kids that you can do on Pancake Day, or any day that you feel like some food themed fun.
Pancake cooking session
Pancake Day wouldn’t be Pancake Day without cooking and enjoying pancakes, and a great start to this day would be to enjoy them for breakfast.
As well as being a great way to spend quality time with your kids, making pancakes is an easy thing for kids to cook, because there aren’t many ingredients, and they can get creative with the toppings.
Here’s an easy pancake recipe you can try with your kids, or to make it even easier, you can buy a premade mix where all you do is add water and shake.
Here are some pancake topping ideas you can try as well:
Sweet pancake toppings
- Baked apples
- Caramel sauce
- Chocolate sauce and mini marshmallows
- Cinnamon sugar
- Honey
- Ice cream and sprinkles
- Jam
- Maple syrup
- Mini M&Ms
- Mixed berries
- Nutella
- Sliced bananas
- Sugar and lemon
- Whipped cream and chocolate chips
- Yoghurt
Savoury pancake toppings
- Bacon and maple syrup
- Crushed nuts
- Feta and spring onion
- Goats cheese and mushroom
- Grated cheese
- Ham and cheese
- Salmon and cream cheese
- Scrambled egg
Pancake race
The first pancake race is thought to have been in 1445, when a woman heard the church bells as she was cooking pancakes.
To get to the church on time, she ran to the church whilst wearing her apron and holding her frying pan, where she had to flip the pancake whilst running to stop it from burning.
As one of your Pancake Day activities for kids, you can do a pancake race with your kids, but instead of using a real frying pan, can use a toy one, or a plastic plate, and see who can cross a finish line the fastest whilst running and flipping a pancake.
Pancake games
As well as the Pancake race, some other games that you can do as part of your Pancake Day activities are:
Pancake themed crafts
There are many craft ideas for kids that have a pancake theme, which are a lot of fun to do on Pancake Day.
Read some pancake books
If you’d like some downtime after a busy day of Pancake Day activities, here are some pancake themed books that will also enhance your kids love of reading:
- Pancakes, Pancakes! by Eric Carle
- Mr Wolf’s Pancakes, by Jan Fearnley
- Mission Defrostable (Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast), by Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney
- Pancakes For Breakfast, by Tomie dePaola
Pancake Day can be much more than just eating pancakes. It can also be a day to find some fun and easy Pancake Day activities for kids that you can enjoy with them.
Some of these, in addition to cooking and enjoying pancakes, are fun Pancake Day games like a pancake race, scavenger hunt, shape games, or even pancake phonics.
You can also do some pancake themed crafts, or take time out to read pancake themed books.
Whatever you decide to do on Pancake Day, I hope it’s an enjoyable day for you and your kids.
