Fly a kite
Flying a kite is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, as well as get your kids to burn off any excess energy in a fun way.
If like me you’re not sure how to fly a kite, then here are some kite flying tips that may be helpful.
Make a bird feeder
Making a bird feeder and then looking at the different types of birds that eat from it, is a nice way for the whole family to enjoy outdoor time.
Here are some homemade bird feeder ideas if this is something you’d like to do.
Learn to ride a bike
Bike riding is another spring activity for families that’s popular during this time of year.
If you have a child that can’t ride a bike, it could be a good time to teach them.
Appreciate the flowers
One of my favourite things about spring are Cherry Blossoms.
If there’s a flower that you love why not visit a park and have your whole family try to find it.
At the same time, you could all look at different types of flowers and discuss what you love about them, and even see if they have different scents.
Feed the ducks
Feeding ducks is something I’ll be doing with my boys during spring, as it’s something they enjoy.
If you want to do this as well, bread isn’t a food that’s recommended to feed them.
Instead, you can feed them the following, which should be given to them in bite-sized pieces:
- Lettuce (rocket, kale, iceberg)
- Oats (flapjacks, rolled oats, instant porridge oats)
- Rice (uncooked or cooked)
- Seeds (bird seed, or seeds you’d eat)
- Sweetcorn
Collect rocks or shells
Perhaps you could hold a competition to see who in your family can collect the largest or smoothest rock, or the biggest amount of shells during a visit to the park or beach.
You could take your collection home and turn them into arts and craft projects.
Visit a farmer’s market
There’s a lot of produce that’s best eaten in spring, and can be found extra fresh at a farmer’s market, as well as other treats you may not get a chance to eat any other time of year.
Explore a nature reserve or gardens
Exploring a nature reserve or gardens is a nice way to spend a sunny spring day.
If you live in the UK, there are many National Trust properties that you can explore that have houses and extensive parklands within them.
Or, perhaps there’s somewhere local that you’ve been meaning to visit, and haven’t had a chance to yet.
Go to a playground
Letting your kids run around a park, play on the play equipment, roll down hills (if there are any), and compete to see who can swing on the swings the highest will hopefully tire them out, so the whole family can have a relaxing afternoon.
Have a picnic
Packing up your favourite foods and heading for a day out to a park, or simply having a picnic in your backyard, is a fun spring activity for families that doesn’t cost a lot, and can take as much time as you want.
Go berry picking
Many local farms have berry-picking sessions, full of berries that are safe to eat once purchased.
However, you can also pick berries at local parks, and even in your own backyard, but if you eat these berries, only eat berries that you have planted yourself, or that you know are safe to eat.
Visit a farm
Animal loving kids will love a day at the farm where they can feed farm animals, and maybe even cuddle them.
If you have a toddler, then this is a particularly great toddler friendly day out idea.
Take a road trip
Spring is a great time of year to pack a picnic, and if you have a toddler, pack some toddler road trip toys and head away for the day, or perhaps even a weekend.
Do some chalk drawings
Outdoor chalk drawing is a fun spring activity for kids who love to draw.
Or for kids who love to play, they could draw a hopscotch game to play with their friends.
Plant some herbs or vegetables
There are many herbs and vegetables that grow well during spring, which may foster a love of gardening, or a desire to learn about where food comes from in your kids.
If this is a spring activity that you would like to try, then some herbs and vegetables that grow well when planted in spring include:
- Beetroot
- Brussel Sprouts
- Carrots
- Coriander
- Dill
- Kale
- Parsley
- Rocket
- Spinach
Read outside
Reading outdoors can be a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
If this sounds like fun, here are some book ideas for 2 year olds and some book ideas for 6 year olds that have fun storylines.
I hope this list of spring activities for families has given you more than one idea that you may like to try with your family this spring.
