Entry way
Decluttering your entry way not only gives you a sense of calm when you walk into your home, but it also provides your guests with somewhere to place their belongings.
You can declutter your entry way by putting packages away, placing coats in bedroom cupboards, storing school bags, and having a bowl for keys and wallets.
Fridge and freezer
One of the more crucial things to declutter before Christmas are your fridge and freezer, because you’ll need extra space for Christmas ingredients, meals, and somewhere to store leftovers.
When decluttering your fridge and freezer, create space for large Christmas ingredients, drinks, and Christmas desserts.
As you’re decluttering your fridge and freezer, make a note of anything you need to add to your grocery list, so you can purchase them in advance.
Kitchen cupboards
Another part of the kitchen that will benefit from a declutter for Christmas are your kitchen cupboards, which you can declutter by:
- Throwing out food that’s expired
- Donating food to a local food bank, that’s within its use by date that you won’t use before Christmas
Kitchen countertops
Between food prep, storing food before it’s put away, and storing Christmas packages, your kitchen countertops may be the most used area of your home over Christmas, so having clear countertops during this time is essential.
You can declutter kitchen countertops by:
- Storing appliances that you won’t use over Christmas
- Storing or donating utensils, crockery, pots, pans, and kitchenware that you don’t use, then making a note of what you need to buy or borrow to cater for guests
Declutter Christmas decorations
Decluttering Christmas decorations before you use them ensures you don’t buy decorations you already have, and that you have what you actually need.
You can declutter Christmas decorations by placing all of your decorations on a table and:
- Donating decorations that no longer suit your décor, or that aren’t age appropriate for your kids
- Throwing out broken decorations
- Storing decorations you want to use in the future in a Christmas decoration storage box
If you have a toddler in your home, you may like to consider using toddler friendly Christmas decorations, so you can still make your home feel festive, but without the fear that sentimental items will get broken.
Spare room
If you’re having guests over Christmas, you’ll need to declutter your spare room, office, or the room where they’ll be sleeping.
You need to make sure that you have room for their clothes, toiletries, and other personal items in the room they’ll be in, and that the room is as dust free and as clean as possible.
Linen closet
Another area to declutter for Christmas, especially if you’re having guests, is your linen closet.
You can declutter your linen closet by throwing out damaged linen including towels, cleaning the linen and towels guests will be using, and making sure you have enough linen and towels for them.
Bathrooms
Decluttering bathrooms is another area that’s important if you’re having guests.
You can declutter bathrooms by throwing out expired toiletries, or toiletries you no longer use, which will free up space for guest toiletries.
Toy declutter before Christmas
Decluttering toys before Christmas is a top priority for many mums, especially if you know your kids will be getting new toys.
The best way to declutter toys is to put all of your kid’s toys in one location, then donate any that work but are no longer played with, and throwing out toys that are broken and can’t be repaired.
If you’re unsure about what toys to declutter before Christmas, you can rotate toys instead, which means storing away some toys, then bringing them back out to play with after a period of time.
Wardrobes and drawers
Decluttering clothes not only creates space for anything new that you or your family may receive for Christmas, but also allows you to give these places a good dust, and the chance to remove non clothing items that may have been stored here during the year.

I love these decluttering ideas, I’ve had some clothes on Vinted for a while and they are yet to sell. I’ll try adding some more items, but otherwise might have to go to Charity! x
Thank you so much, I’m glad you liked the ideas. I’ve also got some items that haven’t sold in awhile, I think I’ll give them a little bit longer then donate them as well. Good luck with your listings and decluttering.
A fridge and toy declutter are definitely needed over here 🙂
Same, these decluttering jobs are constant jobs in my home.
